testとexamineの違い
testの意味は
「試験(する)」
です。
The teacher tested his students in writing.
先生は学生に書き方の試験をした。
Macmillanで調べると
to find out how much someone knows, or how well they can do something by giving them a set of questions to answer or an activity to perform
誰かがどれだけ知っているか、何かをどれぐらいうまくできるかを答えるための一連の質問や演じる活動を与えることによって見つけ出すこと
となっています。
一方、examineは、
「検査[試験]をする」
です。
試験をするという意味ではフォーマルで堅い言い方です。
Macmillanで調べると
to give students an examination to test their knowledge
生徒の知識をするために試験を与えること
となっています。
testとexamineの違いですが、
We examined students to test their ability.
私達は生徒の能力を調べるために試験を行なった。
つまり、testは、能力などを見つけ出す行為そのものを意味し、examineは、能力を見つけ出す行為をするという手法です。
日本語ではtestもexamineも試験するとなってしまいますので、わかりにくくなってしまいますね。
testは”調べる”、examineは”試験制度を実施する”と考えた方がわかりやすいかもしれません。
